May 19 129 miles. Santa Fe to Albuquerque Staying at the luxurious El Vado Motel motto is "Stay Unique"
Started the day with a stop at a nice panaderia in Santa Fe for some Mexican pastries and coffee. So much to choose from and so many items we had no idea what they were. Didn't matter as everything we got was delicious. Just outside of town we suddenly saw this huge horse sculpture. Pulled over and found out it was outside a studio. Not sure if it was for advertising purposes or a commission but it sure was BIG. The style reminded me of the metalworks sculptures we saw all over Ft. Myers while doing the loop.
A Giant Horse
Then it was a pretty uneventful trip to Albuquerque. Mixture of post 1936 Route 66 roads and interstate as we've come to find in New Mexico. Through some of the mountain passes it just made sense to expand and pave right over the old road rather than cut a new road.
Desert mountains
Heading into town found another "giant" not mentioned in the guidebook. Looks like a lumberjack but oddly is advertising for a Vietnamese restaurant. He's holding an arrow which is even more odd.
Giant #2 today!!
In town we spent a couple hours at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History, We bought the annual "Culture Pass" yesterday that gets us into all the New Mexico museums and historical sites. I initially wasn't expecting too much but was surprised how informative it was. They did a good job explaining how the land here evolved over the millennia and why and how it became such a huge depository for dinosaur fossils. They had an animatronic T-rex at the entrance and it was fun watching the small kids jump away when it moved at them!
ROAR!!!!
Then we rode out to a section of road that was pre-1936 Route outside of town. Nice scenery on the way as we searched to find a section of road known as the "Singing Road". There's nothing that marks it, so sort of trial and error. If you drive over the white shoulder line between 45-50MPH you actually here a tune. Lasts about 30 seconds. Took us a couple tries but we finally got it. Interesting, but probably a bit overhyped.
The Singing Hiway
Time to head to the motel. We've been staying at a mix of hotels and motels. Trying to get some of that old Route 66 experience by staying at older but renovated roadway motels where we can. Some are better than others. Todays is excellent. Martha really outdid herself lining up this one. Even has a pool although we didn't have time to try it out. We were off for dinner at Cocina Azul followed by - you guessed it - a craft beer sampling. Tried a flight of 5 at The Boxing Bear Brewery. Chocolate Milk Stout was outstanding!!
We're in a room on the left side
Water was still a bit cold
But beers were "just right"
